2 Things You Must Backup On Your Smartphone

With smartphone technology evolving as fast as it is, you need to make sure that your transition to your "next device" is as seamless as possible.

To do that, you need to save settings and data that you use every day so they will be available next time you switch phones.

Things like your address book just shouldn't have to be recreated just because you want to switch from BlackBerry to iPhone. I have 1300 entries in mine, so if I have to start over again with that, I would be in deep Chimshee.

However, making the databases mutually exclusive is the way smartphone makers market their products.

Instead of relying on the strength of their product to keep you around, they just make it difficult and a hassle for you to switch to the other company's product.

Lame, but that's the game.

That being said, the 2 things that you must make sure you backup are:

1. Address book

My iPhone allows me to sync with Outlook. The BlackBerry I had before allowed me to do the same thing.

The simplest way to backup your phone is to regularly sync it with computer or cloud devices. You can also sync Outlook with GMail which will duplicated all the data you have stored in Outlook with GMail for an extra layer of redundancy.

I did my syncs semi-religiously and when my BlackBerry bought the farm the transition to iPhone was easy.

2. Settings

Unfortunately, this will only be a reference point, since most devices have totally different systems. There is just no way to migrate your settings from one phone to another.

Thankfully, smartphone software allows you to save your settings on your computer even though I had to manually reload them in my iPhone.

The easiest thing to do is to use online backup storage to make a copy of all your data - that way, all your data is backed up an waiting patiently in the cloud for you until you need it.

Once you have these 2 things saved, you can more easily transfer to any new device.

In the future, smartphones are likely going to end up more commonly used to access the internet than computers, so now's the time to get this right because this will soon be your main device.

As technology develops, you will want to occasionally switch to a new platform and making sure you are regularly saving your address book and settings will make your experience trouble free.
